  1. The Soloman Islands were sighted in 1568 by an expedition from
  2. Peru.  Britain established a protectorate in the 1890s.  The
  3. islands saw major World War II battles.  Self-government came on
  4. January 2, 1976 and independence was formally attained on July 7,
  5. 1978.                     @
